About Pharmaceutical Medicine

Pharmaceutical Medicine is a multidisciplinary specialty that focuses on the entire journey of a new medicine, from its initial discovery to its safe and effective use by patients. It is concerned with the discovery, evaluation, registration, monitoring, and clinical aspects of pharmaceutical development. While it overlaps with other medical specialties, Pharmaceutical Medicine is unique in its emphasis on:

  • Clinical testing of drugs: Ensuring medicines are thoroughly evaluated for safety and effectiveness before reaching patients.
  • Bridging the gap from research to real-world use: Translating scientific discoveries into practical applications that benefit patients.
  • Patient safety: Prioritizing the well-being of participants in clinical trials and monitoring the safety profile of new medications.
  • Risk-benefit analysis: Understanding the potential benefits and risks associated with each new medicine.

Clinical pharmacology is the cornerstone of Pharmaceutical Medicine. However, pharmaceutical physicians also possess a broad range of additional skills, including:

  • Knowledge of drug development processes
  • Understanding of clinical trial design and execution
  • Expertise in pharmacoeconomics (the cost-effectiveness of medications)
  • Familiarity with the marketing of pharmaceutical products
  • Business administration skills relevant to the healthcare industry
  • Public health knowledge

This diverse skillset allows pharmaceutical physicians to make significant contributions to the development and delivery of innovative medical treatments.

Pharmaceutical physicians work in a variety of settings, including:

  • The pharmaceutical industry: Developing and bringing new drugs to market.
  • Universities and medical schools: Conducting research and training future generations of scientists.
  • Drug regulatory authorities: Ensuring that only safe and effective medicines are available to the public.
  • Contract research organizations (CROs): Providing expertise in clinical trial design and execution.

Despite their diverse workplaces, pharmaceutical physicians share a common goal: to advance the development and use of safe and effective medicines.

Although they no longer have direct contact with patients, their work has a wider impact on public health. They work within the strict legal regulations that apply to medicines and the ethical and professional codes that exist to protect the best interests of patients.

In some countries, including the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, and recently Belgium, Pharmaceutical Medicine is a recognized medical specialty. This recognition signifies the importance of this field and ensures high standards for practicing pharmaceutical physicians.

In the UK, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians provides accreditation for the specialty which is one of the fastest-growing medical specialties in the UK.

Back in the 1970s, there were only 260 pharmaceutical physicians. By the mid-90s, that figure was 700. Nowadays, more than 2,500 doctors are working in the specialty – and around 140 are undergoing their training to become pharmaceutical physicians at any one time.
